Ways to Organize Text and Image Snippets in Mac OS X

The Mac OS X clipboard limits you to storing only one item at a time, but there probably are instances when you would like to keep more than one snippet for later use. Fortunately, there are other alternatives available for storing text and image snippets in Mac OS X.

Stickies

Mac OS X comes with a Post-It note type program called Stickies that lets you easily store text and image snippets.

If the Mac OS X Stickies application is too limited for you, there are several third-party Stickies-type applications with more advanced features. Search MacUpdate for "Stickies" and you will find plenty of alternatives.

Third-Party Clipboards

There are quite a few free and shareware third-party clipboard programs and plug-ins that let you store multiple text and image snippets for easy access at any time. These programs include plug-ins that can be accessed from the Mac OS X menu bar or with keyboard shortcuts, widgets for use with Dashboard and standalone applications.

Notes Applications

Notes applications usually include Stickies features but they also have database functions that let you organize and sort your notes. One powerful program is Soho Notes. It is a bit expensive, but it includes the benefits of a full-featured notes program, a clipboard-like feature that is accessed with a contextual menu item and a Stickies feature that can be accessed with a keyboard shortcut.

Journals

A fourth way to save text and image snippets is to use a journal application. These applications are similar to notes programs, but they are more useful if you want to use snippets for longer pieces of writing. Once a snippet is added to a journal, often through the use of a contextual menu, keyboard shortcut or the Services menu, you can easily add to the snippet to create a letter, article or longer work.
