Mac OS X: What is a Package?

Mac OS X introduced a new type of "file" to the Macintosh community--the package. A package is a collection of related files used for some common purpose. The most obvious examples of packages that Mac OS X users will encounter are programs compiled to run under OS X. Opening the Application folder in the top-level directory of a sytem running OS X will reveal many of these applications. By clicking or right-clicking on an application like TextEdit, a contextual menu will appear with "Show Package Contents" being one of the menu items. Selecting this option will reveal all the files associated with the TextEdit application.
Note: It is important that users not try to manipulate the files in a package because doing so may cause the application to fail.
