Microsoft has found that its latest version of Virtual PC for the Macintosh does not work with Tiger. The Virtual Switch component, which allows users to assign an IP address for the PC software which is different than the address used by the users Macintosh. This should not provide much of an obstacle for most users.
Update: Microsoft has released an update, Virtual PC 7.0.2, which fixes this problem. Users should download and install this update.
NOTE: Virtual PC will NOT work on the new Intel-based Macintoshes. There are several other solutions available to users with Intel-based Macintoshes. Parallels is a software package which runs in a similar fashion to Virtual PC except that it runs much faster than Virtual PC. OSU has a site license for Parallels. Information about how to obtain a copy of Parallels can be found on the OIT website.
Also users with Intel systems can download and install a copy of Apple's Bootcamp which partitions the internal hard drive of any Intel-based Macintosh into two parts, a Macintosh partition and a Windows partition. Users can then install Windows XP or Vista onto the Windows partition. In order to choose which operating system to use the user would hold down the Option key at the beginning of the system startup process. The system will present the user with the Macintosh and Windows partitions and the user can then choose to start from either partition. Of course it is necessary to reboot the computer when switching from one operating system to the other.
