Sometimes there is more than one application that will open a file of a particular type. In order to select which program will open a file, first highlight the file by clicking on it one time. Go to the File menu and select Get Info. The window that appears should look something like this:
Once it opens, click the disclosure triangle next to Open with:. A list of programs that the system thinks would open the file will appear. Choose the desired application from the list. If the desired application does not appear on the list then select Other... at the bottom of the list.
If you have selected Other..., this window should appear:
Select the desired application from the list of recommended applications and then click the Add button at the bottom of the window (it becomes active once you've made a selection). If the desired application appears grayed out, then select All Applications from the Show pop-up menu.
When you've chosen the application you want to use, clicking on the Change All button in the Get Info window will tell the system to open all files of this type with your selected application from this point on.
