Macintosh Type 1 Errors

When trying to open an application (Eudora, Netscape, etc.), it may crash with the message: "Type 1 Error has occurred".
This error is officially titled a "Bus Error" and more technical information regarding this error can be found inApple's Knowledge Base.
What is usually happening is that your application doesn't have enough memory allocated to it in order to run properly.
Macintosh Operating Systems do not dynamically allocate memory to applications up to, but not including, Mac OS X.
To allocate more memory to a program:
  1. Highlight the icon by clicking on it once.
  2. Click on the File menu and choose Get Info... (Get Info then Memory on newer Macintoshes)
  3. Under the "Preferred Size" field towards the bottom of that new window, raise the number in that field by 1000 or 2000. More memory will be allocated to that application when running it the next time.
  4. Close the window and try running your program again.
Notes: Be aware that you may not be able to have as many applications open as you once were able to, because more memory has been manually allocated to the application(s) giving you problems. You may run into "Not enough memory" errors after doing the above steps if the memory being used exceeds available memory.
